NYE

It’s champagne eve! With 2014 merely hours away, we are keeping things simple tonight. So here’s the deal:

1. yes we are open this evening, 5pm-10:30pm

2. serving our regular menu of freshly simple seafood, no sham NYE prix-fixe

3. still no reservations and no large parties please, we cannot accommodate

4. we will be closed on Wednesday, January 1

We asked Santa for just one thing this year…to no avail. Totally could have fit in our apartment. Guess we will just have to wait for our birthday then.

Happy New Year and see you upstate!
(just not on new year’s day as we will be closed)

Giddy Up, Giddy Up, Giddy Up

An anesthesiologist, a dude with an epic beard, guy whose parents let him play with firecrackers and another guy whose dad only let him drink imported beer walk into a bar got together and opened Great South Bay Brewery. #truestory
We tapped their Sleigh Ryed for tonight, a winter red rye ale that’s full of malty rye flavor with piney notes of juniper berries.

Quality beer aside, what do we like the most about these guys? On their site, they note the proper glassware to serve each of their seasonal brews in. Hmmm…just like somebody else we all know.

Boxing Day

48 hours of rest and relaxation, that’s how we spent the holiday. And watched lots of movies. Lots.

So now we’re waiting on deliveries and baking whiskey cakes for you fine folks, as we are back in business today.

Electric Avenue

Went  up to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, the true Little Italy of NYC. A bunch of old school, cash only, multigenerational family businesses. Calabria Pork Store was one of our first stops.

ceiling full of soppressata

Post clams oreganata and stuffed eggplant lunch at Giovanni’s we had proper espresso and cappuccino while getting jacked up on sugar at Artuso Pastry.

soft, squishy rainbow cookies

One of our last stops was for crazy fresh cheese from Casa della Mozzarella – there’s no photo because we (husband) wolfed the 1.25 lbs worth of mozzarella already.

Making A List, Checking It Twice

In the midst of your holiday meltdown? Give cool gifts that also support local and/or small business. Here’s what we’re wrapping while under the influence.

wife’s drunk wrapping far surpasses husband’s sober wrapping style

Christmas In Hollis

Technically Barney’s is not in Queens, but given the next stop after on the N/R/Q line is Queensboro Plaza it’s all kind of the same. At least for those of us who live below 14th street.

The plan was check out all the holiday windows with our friend Neil-y O in midtown, except the plan did not include giant, fluffy rain flakes. So we sat in Fred’s and drank enjoyed brunch instead. There’s no SantaCon in midtown.

Christmas Wrapping

Decorated our fancy bodega Christmas tree. And of course anchored it to the china cabinet so the beast can’t knock it over. Again.
Some of us stayed as far away as possible while the decorating was taking place…
While others were front and center.

Alright – we showed you ours, so it’s only fair you now show us yours.

A Christmas Story (Part ll)

So all’s well that ends well look what made its way into our apartment. Freshly cut from the University @ 8th Street bodega. Because no forrest is open at 1am.

photo-301

more like a giant Christmas bush than tree

And tho a mere three block walk home, every block had at least one drunk person inquire: Did you steal that tree?
