Back By Popular Demand

And by popular we mean we (wife) like it…new menu auditions!

It started innocently enough with December’s Pate Party. Once we mastered that we thought, what other French recipe should we try? Thus the monthly contest: Just Like Top Chef But Not Really was born. January = quiche.

Important to note that upstate won Best Crust – so moist and flakey the ‘judges’ gushed. Wilsher had an excellent showing with two different quiches but alas Lee took first place with a lobster masterpiece. Unanimous vote. His secret ingredient? Duck fat. Damn it was good. FYI – creme fraiche makes for a flakey, tasty crust.

With all that sampling of savory, a dose of sweetness was in order and chocolate covered macaroons hit the spot. So yes, in addition to whiskey cake there is actually one other dessert I make.

Last Sunday in February is our next contest. Who’s in?

Wild Oysters

That’s right folks, wild Narragansett Bay oysters – from the exotic Island of Rhode. They are wild and they are insane.

Tapped a couple of new beers this morning, our updated draught list here.

Blue Oyster Cult

A most excellent and incredibly influential American rock band from New York. Seemed appropriate morning music after trudging through the snow to organize our oysters and bake a few whiskey cakes. Loved that Burnin’ For You video.

We’ve got over 20 oysters in house today folks…so this evening just throw on your boots, can even leave the sweatpants on as there’s no need for fancy ensembles on a day like today.

You should also check out EV Grieve’s The Storm of the Saturday® photos, while not quite a storm – city is always kinda fun for the first few hours of a snowfall, before it turns all dirty and slushy.

Your Questions, Our Answers

So now that everyone is well versed in our we used reclaimed lumber from Upstate NY for the interior of our place story, seems folks are equally curious about a few other things we do around here. You asked, we answered.

Q: Where did you get those metal bowls you serve customers?

A: From a restaurant supply store in the Bowery, aptly named: Chef Restaurant Supplies

Q: What’s downstairs?

A: Our office, storage and kegs of beer – along with old beer crap valuable antiques that we (husband) have been collecting for years and are not allowed to bring upstairs

Q: Who writes this blog?

A: The wife is the author behind the collective ‘we’

Happy to answer any other questions you may have, just shoot us a note: upstate1ave@gmail.com

A Saturday Type of Sunday

It was 16 degrees out at 7:30 this morning. Cold weather doesn’t seem to deter you good people, as we went through two whiskey cakes last night and why we (wife) were up early today. That and BuckShowalter also never sleeps past 7 AM-ish.

The big game starts at 4:30 PM, so by 8 PM a good dose of cabin fever will have set in and with it being a holiday weekend a little NY victory celebration will be in order too. Yes, we want the Giants to win since Buffalo currently holds the longest active streak of playoff misses finished their season.

We’ve got great beer on draught and plenty of oysters, so come on by this evening.

Holy Hat-Trick People

Three super cool reviews in one week…

You can tell these people really know and love their seafood. Julia M

The scallop special was leaving me wanting to lick the plate. Tammi S

As someone who is crazy about seafood, I’m infatuated with Upstate. Abby S

Well new friends Julia, Tammi and Abby, we would like to publicly offer a heartfelt THANK YOU for your support. And we look forward to seeing you all again.

My grandmother always said “Please and thank you are magical words.” As a somewhat surly adolescent, that reminder was often received with an eye roll but like most things taught during childhood you later realize how right, true or important those lessons were. Except for algebra. Have yet to figure out a good use for algebra.

Working For The Weekend

Enjoying the beautiful weather while waiting for our beer and fish deliveries – hanging out front, rather than sitting downstairs in our glamorous office.

So with morning chores out of the way and whiskey cakes freshly baked, the only thing left to do is to decide which new kegs to tap as you people drank us out of house both this Friday and Saturday. An excellent problem we always like to have.

And to think we were worried that no drinking in January was going to be everyone’s resolution, um clearly not. Whew. Will have an updated draught list shortly.

All Is Quiet On New Year’s Day

Happy New Year! Lots of folks liked the photos from our previous post, so we dug up a few more.

We (husband) really wanted to keep this giant sign but eventually were overruled.

Cousin Victor, total badass with the sledge hammer.

In all the mess, we did discover and then uncover the old brick wall.

Thankful for a construction free 2012. This week on draught and our oyster selection.

    See you upstate!
