Beer Goggles

There sure does seem to be a lot of upstate pride roaming on the island of Manhattan. In particular folks like posing in front of our door…like our friend Paul from Clinton, NY.

And our friend Jim from New Hartford, NY

So the next time you are in the neighborhood, there’s no need to try and fight your sudden surge of upstate pride – just embrace it. And hey if you email us the photo, upstate1ave@gmail.com we’ll gladly put it on our site.

See you upstate!

Dine Out Irene on 9.25

Be sure to dine out this Sunday, September 25 – it’s for an important cause: to aid local NY farmers that suffered significant loss due to Hurricane Irene. Participating New York City restaurantswill donate up to 10% of sales, funds will go directly to GrowNYC and Just Food, who will distribute them to area farms.

We will open at 12pm and donate 10% of all brunch/lunch sales to this effort. So please join us!

Oh and yesterday we had a surprise visit…that thankfully ended with a happy note.

See you upstate!

Awe Shucks

Dear Upstate - Your bar has definitely filled a void in the neighborhood. We were only in town briefly before returning home to Minnesota and sifted through bar upon bar to find a decent meeting place …where we felt comfortable and actually liked the beer selection. Your space is beautiful, the entire staff was friendly and fun–we wish you so much success. My only regret was that we didn’t get to try the food.

Thanks and until next time,
Valerie & Casey

Well new friends Valerie & Casey – we greatly appreciate the kind words. Glad you enjoyed your time upstate and hope with your next NYC trip you can come for dinner. As Chef is always whipping up something seafood-y like our house-cured salmon with a champagne and sea salt rub. This week’s catch is Wild British Columbian Salmon.

Chef creates paper thin slices…

And then he plates it with fancy-pants flair

We have one other important ‘thank you’ this week – to movie stars Andrew and Chris over at Immaculate Infatuation for their recent upstate review.

See you upstate!

Jimmy Carter Saved Craft Beer

As we’re gearing up for the Fourth Annual NY Craft Beer week, we should all say a little thank you to Jimmy Carter.

That’s right, our 39th President de-regulated the beer market in 1979, which up until then had been tightly controlled by the government since the end of prohibition.

Hey thanks Jimmy!

And then there’s Billy Carter, younger brother to President Jimmy…

Billy Beer was first made in the US back in July 1977, by the Falls City Brewing Company, along with by Cold Spring Brewing,West End Brewing Company and Pearl Brewing Company.

Billy was selected as spokesman for the beer because he was widely known to enjoy drinking beer. But actually Billy’s beer brand of choice was PBR.

So while we do not have any PBR in the house, this week on draught we’ve got:

  • Sly Fox Ichor
  • Lake Placid IPA
  • Kelso Pale
  • O’Reily’s Stout
  • Ithaca Caskazilla
  • Peak Summit Ale
  • Captain Lawrence Smoke Porter
  • Southampton Keller Pilsner

See you upstate!

Laughing Happy Fish Heads

Head in for head-on shrimp, delivered today from the Florida Keys. Sauteed in butter, white wine and garlic – Chef makes the whole place smell great as a result. Yet eating them is far more enjoyable than merely smelling them.

Of course head-on shrimp makes us start singing (and finding it hard to stop) the Fish Head song from Barnes & Barnes. DYK that one of the guys, Bill Mumy was the kid on that sci-fi tv show: Lost In Space? And incase you have never seen their amazing short film that Rolling Stone cited as one of the top 100 video of all time, check it out below.

Rolypoly fishheads are never seen drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants with oriental women!

See you upstate!

#craftbeer & #oysters

We’ve now been open for a month and are grateful for everyone’s support and patience as we worked out a few things:

  • Rolling out our seafood-centric menu, with still a few more additions to come
  • Now opening at 12pm on Saturdays & Sundays
  • Getting the website live along with all our contact info

Next up – twitter. Folks can now follow us: @upstate95first as we practice tweeting in real-time. Actually some of us (wife) have been tweeting since 2007, while others here at upstate craft beer & oyster bar are starting to learn. Luckily we have some expertise on our side so we can all quickly get the hang of it.

Enjoy the holiday weekend, have fun and safe travels to those venturing off the island this weekend. For those sticking around, be sure to come by as we’ll be here with plenty of oysters and new beers on tap. See you upstate!
